March Meeting Recap

Thank you to everyone that came out to our March meeting at Maguire’s Hill 16!  We had over 40 people in attendance making it one of our most successful meetings!  If you were not able to make it, here’s what you missed:

– Our speaker was Adam Hasner, former Majority Leader of the Florida House.  Adam is running to be the Congressional Representative for CD22 (Allen West’s current seat).  He is currently the only Republican running for the seat and has the endorsements of Allen West, Marco Rubio and former Governor Jeb Bush.  Adam spoke not only about his own race, but also about the nation’s political climate and how we need to work together to make sure President Obama is a one-term president.

– March starts our annual membership drive.  We had over 10 people join or renew their memberships.  We also took pledges from several other guests who will be joining before at our April meeting.

– VP Nick Stone gave us a recap on the Tampa FFYR quarterly and announced that the annual will be right here in Region 8.

– Treasurer Michael DeGruccio announced the BREC Lincoln Day dinner.  YRs will have the opportunity to volunteer and purchase discounted tickets.

– Past President Sheela Venero spoke about Classy Conservatives, a social group for conservative women in Broward.  You can find them on Facebook or on their site www.classyconservative.com

– Member India Trotter announced the launch of The Y Generation, a free social site dedicated to making politics concise for students and young professionals.  Check them out at www.the-ygeneration.com

– We were also joined by some special guests who are running for office:

- Gineen Bresso, a young Republican, running for CD20 hoping to win the primary for the chance to go head-to-head with Rep Wasserman-Schultz.

- Lynn Simon, a BCYR associate member, running for FL House 104.

- Nonpartisan candidates Torey Alston and a representative for Dan Daley dropped by to say Hi as well.  Torey is running for school district 5 and Dan is running for Coral Springs City Commission.

If you are interested in joining the YRs or need to renew your membership you can bring a check or cash to our April meeting.  One year memberships are $25, $35 for couples and $15 for associate members (under 18, over 40, not local).

Thank you to everyone that came out; it was awesome to see so many people enthusiastic about the YRs!

Tampa Quarterly Was Arrrrguably Great

by Vice President Nick Stone

Young Republicans had a lot to celebrate as we gathered in Tampa for our Winter Quarterly.  We were energized to be in the same town where our party faithful will gather to nominate our presidential candidate later this year.

Several Broward County YR’s were able to make the trip, and it was great to mingle with Young Republicans from all parts of the state.  From the panhandle to Miami, our members are working on campaigns and running for office themselves.  I’m proud to report that we are enthusiastic about our Republican candidates in all regions, at all levels.  This will be a good year for Republicans.

Meeting at the Florida Aquarium worked really great.  In the morning, we got an exciting preview of the RNC convention by Jason Osborne and heard great conservative business and life stories from David Yates, CEO of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  After lunch, we had an exciting interactive panel discussion on The 4 M’s of Campaigning: Message, Money, Momentum, and Media with Dr. Susan MacManus, Adam Goodman, April Schiff, Adam Smith, and Nancy Watkins.

Tampa was a lot of fun! After gathering at our hotel in Downtown Tampa, we were treated to dinner and cocktails by the Tampa Bay Young Republicans at the historic Columbia Restaurant.  On Friday night, lots of YR’s took over Howl at the Moon in Channelside and others scoped out Ybor City where we celebrated Gasparilla at Gaspar’s Grotto the next night.

The Tampa Bay YR’s were great hosts.  Ashley Intartaglia gave us several ideas to make the Annual meeting in Region 8 a huge success.  We look forward to having Florida YR’s in South Florida this June.  Until then, look for Broward County to continue leading the way toward GOP Victory in 2012!
